How the famine hit IrelandThe deadly fungus that hit Ireland, thought to have originated in South America or mountainous regions in Mexico, devestated the Irish. Nearly every crop was destroyed, and the immediate years after the Blight had seemed to have begun to disappear, crops that managed to survive were pitifully small. This caused many people to either move to other parts of the world, or try to survive in the underfed world of Ireland. As bad as the Great Famine was, one good thing did come from it: the British land owners dropped the debt Irishmen owed due to the lack of income and inability to sell their crops.
